Happy Birthday, #SQLServer! 1989 was a pivotal year for data management and technology. Excel, having launched just a couple of years earlier, was beginning to redefine how users interacted with data on personal computers. At the same time, Microsoft collaborated with Ashton Tate, the creators of dBase, and Sybase to develop this 1.0 database management system. Fast forward to 2025 and it also shares a codebase with Azure SQL Database. It has since become one of the most popular RDBMs worldwide. Microsoft SQL Server has evolved since then, adding performance, data quality, security, and programmability achievements.

The first SQL Server product manager was Bob Muglia, a visionary leader who later served as President of Servers and Tools, guiding the development and strategic direction of SQL Server during its first few years.

After his time at Microsoft, Bob continued to other data-intensive tech industry solutions by taking on the role of CEO at Snowflake, where he has helped to revolutionize cloud-based data warehousing.

I bet @SQLClippy is proud of the impact SQL Server has had on the world.
